Position Overview 

An Engineering Project Manager is accountable for successful outcomes on sophisticated integrated test, measurement, or automation systems for delivery to our customers!  They spend most of their time developing, implementing and monitoring to a project plan, with strong emphasis on communication management.  They are deeply involved in all aspects of the projects, ensuring their accountability for the business and technical success of the solution.  The successful Engineering Project Manager is efficiency-driven, looking for ways to improve project timelines and cost without sacrificing quality or customer satisfaction. 

Organization 

The Engineering Project Manager will be a part of a highly qualified, growing team and lead the definition, development, and delivery of custom integrated test systems for some of NI’s largest customers. They are instrumental in helping the team evolve and expand by supporting continuous improvement initiatives and influencing specialization areas; therefore, experience communicating with various customers and clients from sole contributor to Executive across multiple fields (Engineering, Sales, Clients) will be valued. Their ability to quickly build credibility and trust for effective collaboration with internal and external customers towards mutual outcomes will drive success.

In this Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:  

  • Create project plans that drive successful, measurable project execution: Ensure technical feasibility, financial viability, risk assessment and schedule are well understood by customers.  Ensure the project team’s identification and document customer requirements and changes to those requirements. Work with project teams to define appropriate technical solutions. Support the project team’s generation and execution of a work breakdown structure that aligns with budget and routinely reassess as needed.  Actively handle risks to identify changes and mitigation strategies.  Clearly communicate all schedule constraints and project landmarks.
  • Act as the single point of contact for the project: Develop project communication plans and ensure execution to the plan, resulting in professional and consistent communication with the customer and other partners. Effectively negotiate scope and schedule changes. Accurately identify and communicate internal and external customers’ needs. Organize and facilitate project reviews that ensure key customers are presented with accurate and concise information to make decisions. 
  • Influence others to ensure successful delivery: Frequently collaborate with other departments such as manufacturing, R&D, Operations, Quality and Sales. Lead with influence to ensure the success of your projects and set the stage for future success of your next project working with these customers.  Develop a sense of urgency in customers while also building a solid foundation for future collaboration.
  • Lead project analysis on scope, schedule & budget planning and risk assessment: Monitor and report out to customers on project costs, status, quality; call out issues when vital. Evaluate changes that substantially impact the scope, budget, or schedule of projects and drive decisions on these changes.
  • Collaborate with resource managers to ensure appropriate staffing on projects: Influence and make decisions about scope, schedule, and resources. 
  • Drive process and tool improvement efforts: Drive continuous improvement through successful lessons learned activities that result in appropriate process or tool changes.  Lead initiatives to help the organization operate more efficiently and effective.  Be passionate about continuous improvement.
  • Lead and give direction to project coordinators and other project team members: Ensure adherence to established processes and standard methodologies. Review work quality and provide mentorship to other project team members. Act as a subject matter expert in one or more key areas, such as customer, application or tool/process expertise.

Who You Are:

The following skills and experience are required:

  • Strong understanding of project management principles and practices such as scope / schedule / cost management, interdepartmental project execution, monitoring and control of project metrics, risk / issue management, and partner management.
  • A minimum of at least 5 years’ experience leading and advising customer-facing engineering projects.
  • Experience in handling customer-facing solution delivery with strong communication skills, presentation skills and negotiation skills 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
    • Alternatively, equivalent work experience. 
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.
  • Proven organizational, multi-tasking, and documentation skills.
  • Proven technical and executive communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and work effectively with teams on a fixed schedule
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive non-collaborative tasks to timely completion
  • US Person (US Citizen or Green Card ) ONLY, ability to work on ITAR and CUI projects and qualify for DoD Clearances

Preferred Qualifications that Set You Apart:

  • A PMP or PMI-ACP certification.
  • Work experience with Agile or Hybrid customer-facing engineering projects.
  • MBA or Master`s Degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
    • Aerospace industry test system experience is highly desirable.
    • Experience managing defense contracts is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of business concepts such as contract building, terms and conditions preferred
  • Previous exposure to National Instruments hardware and software
    • First-hand experience using them is preferred.

Our compensation philosophy is simple: we pay a competitive base salary, within the local market in which we operate, and reward performance during our annual merit review process. The salary range for this role is $154,000 - $200,000 annually, commensurate with the skills, talent, capabilities, and experience each candidate brings to a role.
