The Opportunity:

Applications are invited for a Lecturer/Reader (Assistant/Associate Professor) position in Computer Systems to join the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The post is based within the School’s Institute for Computing Systems Architecture (ICSA), which focuses on all aspects of systems including computer architecture, networking, operating systems, parallel and distributed systems, compilers, applied databases, mobile computing, machine learning systems, embedded/IoT systems, and security.

This position is part of a wider strategy to grow and strengthen computer systems research across the School. Candidates with research expertise in all aspects of computer systems are invited to apply, with special consideration given to applicants in computer architecture, hardware security, machine learning systems and neuromorphic computing systems.

We are seeking current and future leaders in the field. The successful candidates will have (or be near to completing) a PhD, outstanding track record of research, evidence of growing reputation, a committed vision and research agenda, the enthusiasm and ability to undertake original research, to manage a research group, and to engage with teaching and academic supervision.

The School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is one of the largest in Europe, with more than 120 academic staff and a total of over 500 post-doctoral researchers, research students and support staff. Informatics at Edinburgh rated highest on Research Power in the most recent Research Excellence Framework. The School has strong links with industry, with dedicated business incubator space and well-established enterprise and business development programmes. The University of Edinburgh has recently established the Bayes Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, which provides a locus for fruitful multi-disciplinary work, including a range of companies collocated in it. The salary for this post is:

  • Lecturer at Grade UE08: £49,250 - £60,321 per annum.
  • Reader at Grade UE09: £62,098 - £76,398 per annum.

 

Your skills and attributes for success: 

 

UE08 Lecturer (Assistant Professor):

  • PhD or equivalent (such as extensive industry experience), and experience as an established academic in the broad area of Computer Systems

Candidates who are close to completing their PhD (i.e. thesis submission is imminent), and who otherwise meet the selection criteria, will be considered.)

  • Ability to undertake original research, including directing a research group.
  • Ability to attract research funding as an independent researcher.
  • A track record of first author and/or collaborative publications in high quality journals and international conferences.
  • Strong relevant research and teaching skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills in a range of contexts (e.g. teaching, research presentations and publications).
  • Ability to contribute to teaching on a range of non-Honours courses as well as in more specialist areas of machine learning.

The ability to engage with a range of teaching mediums including online and distance learning.

UE09 Reader* (Associate Professor): as above and including:

  • Proven ability to provide leadership for activities in delivering the School’s objectives.
  • Extensive experience in research, postgraduate supervision and teaching.
  • Proven ability to foster and embed a strong student-focused culture.
  • Evidence of significant achievement in the relevant field through (e.g.) successful knowledge transfer from research to academic community, public, private and/or voluntary sectors and general public; the receipt of prestigious prizes and awards; membership of national and international bodies relevant to the research field.
  • Experience of managing, motivating and developing research staff, students and projects.

.*PhD must be completed for a Reader appointment.
