The School of Physics & Astronomy is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who has the ability to provide first-class specialist technical and engineering support to the Nuclear Physics Research Group, in support of its world-renowned research and teaching activities. 

The Opportunity:

This role offers a unique and fantastic opportunity to apply and develop your already well-established engineering, technical, facilities-management, health & safety and project management skills in an exciting and world leading research-intensive environment.

You will be able to demonstrate high levels of expertise in the design, manufacture, fault diagnosis and repair of both mainstream and bespoke laboratory apparatus and equipment which will require you to be highly creative and to possess the ability to propose novel solutions to complex and challenging engineering problems. You should also have a keen willingness to learn new and advanced skills and specialist techniques. Having a good understanding of computer aided design (CAD), sheet metal work and the ability to undertake work requiring the use of a range of welding/thermal processes would also be highly desirable.

With a level of responsibility and autonomy, commensurate with the grading of this post, you will be expected to engage directly with a variety of other staff and students in the design, manufacture, construction and commissioning of a vast array of experimental scientific equipment and laboratory apparatus to meet the ever-evolving needs of the group’s research and teaching activities. Therefore, it is essential that you are a confident and clear communicator.

Ideally you will have a university degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate engineering or science subject, and/or be able to demonstrate five or more years vocational experience in a technical or engineering role, preferably within the Higher Education sector, where it can be clearly shown that you have taken on progressively more demanding responsibilities.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) however, we are open to considering flexible working patterns.
