The Role

The Risk Champion role aims to foster a positive risk culture and enhance Risk Management maturity. They are subject matter experts in risk management framework, tools, and processes for their specific business area. Collaborating with Risk Management, they ensure effective understanding, coordination, and implementation of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) within their team/business. Risk Champions support their team/business in identifying, assessing, managing, and reporting risks, controls, and issues in line with ERMF, Group Risk Policies, and Risk Guidelines. They also promote risk communication, encourage standard methodologies, and facilitate the coordination of risk management practices into the overall business strategy.

Role:

At a high level, we are seeking:

  • Experience in 1st or 2nd Line Risk Management, which should include experience in:
    • Risk & Control Self-Assessments (RCSA) 
    • Control Testing 
    • Risk Assessments
    • Managing Risk Events and Issues
    • Also possessing an outgoing personality and confidence in order to approach stakeholders at any level

At a deeper level:

Risk Champions act as a conduit between the Risk Management division and their business helping their colleagues by:

Acting as a point of contact towards Risk Management and for risk matters in their respective business:

  • Primary point of contact for colleagues seeking assistance, information, or support related to risk management.
  • Facilitating engagement between colleagues in their respective business and the Risk Management division, helping to address queries and communicate relevant key information.

Understand and embed the ERMF, Group risk policies and Risk Guidelines and how the risk processes work:

  • Be familiar and understand the ERMF.
  • Be familiar and understand the Risk Library Level 1, 2 and 3 risks.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues in understanding risk practices works, including the ERM Framework and associated methodologies and approaches deployed to manage risks, such as Internal Control System (ICS), Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSAs), Risk Metrics, Bow-Tie, Assessment Risk Methodology (ARM), Corporate Risk Report (CRR) etc. This may involve providing training, guidance, and support in implementing ERMF Process, conducting risk assessments and identifying risk exposures. 

• Maintain and continuously develop own knowledge around core products, processes, technologies to identify and address potential risks.

Understand and embed risk policies and associated documents such as procedures, guidelines etc., helping colleagues to connect these to business activities and processes:

  • Be aware of the Risk Policies, Procedures and Guidelines when relevant/applicable to them and know where to access the documents.
  • Be familiar with the responsibilities stated in the Risk Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
  • Assist Policy/Document owners in reviewing their business policies & documents to ensure alignment with Risk Group Policies, ERMF, and risk guidelines.
  • Help colleagues connect Risk Policies and documents to their business activities and processes. Ensure risk management is coordinated with SOPs, dashboards, and daily operations.

Share key risk messages and communications:

  • Cascade important risk-related information, updates, and best practices to colleagues and management (from whiteboards, team meeting, Committees, Risk Champions Forum and meetings with 2nd or 3rd Line). 
  • Communicate the relevance of risk management to colleagues’ roles and responsibilities, fostering a culture of risk awareness.
  • Cascade regulatory updates and recommendations, understand their impact on the business area, assist in reassessment of risks and controls, as necessary

Support colleagues in the timely identification, recording, monitoring, mitigation, closing, and reporting of risk issues and incidents: 

  • Monitor teams/divisions Risk Profile in the Risk Management Tool to ensure high-quality data throughout the year. This includes ensuring risks identified by the team and the control effectiveness ratings are current. 
  • Work with the Business to ensure that appropriate Controls are identified and mapped to Risks. 
  • Work with the Business to ensure issues identified are mapped to the appropriate Controls. 
  • Support end-to-end Incidents and Issue Management process ensuring all details are correct and kept up to date. 
  • Ensure issues and action are appropriately captured in the Risk Management Tool
  • Take part in proactive and/or bespoke risk assessments on behalf of their business when required.

Monitor, report and escalate to Management and Risk Management on any area of concern with the local risk process and / or culture: 

  • Escalate in a timely manner material Risk Event, Issue or Risks to their respective line management and Risk Management, including challenging on all risk and control matters when necessary. 
  • Report to the relevant committees on critical/high issues not resolved within the recommended timeframe. 
  • Support second line functions in the pro-active identification of risks
  • Support the follow up of Internal (and in certain circumstance, External) Audit findings, recommendations, and action plans. 
  • Contribute to the creation, maintenance, and reporting of Key Risk Indicator metrics.

Co-ordinate and participate in recurrent risk reporting: 

  • Contribute to recurrent risk reporting activities by providing input, data, and insights from their business.
  • Provide operational risk reporting to Senior Management by proposing and monitoring operational risk KPIs/KRIs in line with the review cycle.
  • Facilitate the RCSA workshops on behalf of the business head on an annual basis, including challenging the appropriateness and assessment of the Risks and Controls.
