We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Computing Support Officer to join our Computing Support Team. The successful candidate will provide first- and second-line support to all staff within the School of Biological Sciences. This role involves installing and maintaining hardware and software, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, and assisting with the administration of our server infrastructure.

 

This post is advertised as full-time (35 hours per week). We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combine a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

 

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will gain experience in a variety of areas, including professional development through opportunities for career advancement within the School of Biological Sciences and the wider University IT Services. They will be involved in special projects that provide exposure to advanced IT systems and innovative solutions.

Working in a collaborative environment, the candidate will closely interact with a supportive team of IT professionals and engage in cross-departmental projects, offering a broader perspective and diverse experiences. They will play a crucial role in supporting cutting-edge research by ensuring reliable and efficient IT services, directly impacting the daily operations of staff and students.

The role offers diverse experiences, including working with various operating systems and hardware such as Windows, OS X, and Linux/Unix, and developing strong problem-solving skills by addressing a wide range of technical issues and user queries. Networking opportunities will be abundant, allowing the candidate to build relationships with academic, administrative, and technical staff across the University, and expand their professional networks through interactions with other IT professionals and departments.

Additionally, the position supports a healthy work-life balance with flexible working arrangements and access to University policies that promote well-being and professional growth.

 

Expected commencement date: February 3rd 2025.

 

About the role:

  • Provide front-line support to users, resolving common technical problems and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Install and upgrade computers across the School, supporting a range of operating systems including Windows and OS X.
  • Assist in maintaining the College Server Room.
  • Manage the School’s printer estate, including consumables and repairs.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of IT policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Provide user documentation and online resources.
  • Participate in team meetings and discussions.
  • Attend training courses to keep skills up-to-date.

 

Your skills and attributes for success:

 

  • Essential:
    • SVQ 3 in a relevant subject or equivalent, with relevant work experience in a busy enterprise or educational environment.
    • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    • Experience in frontline IT support and/or helpdesk environments.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Flexibility and mobility to work across multiple sites.
    • Commitment to maintaining user confidentiality and adhering to all relevant policies.

 

  • Desirable:
    • Knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems.
    • Experience with current technologies used at the University.
    • Familiarity with University support procedures and systems.
    • Experience working in a ‘Life Science’ environment.
