The Opportunity

This post has a focus on and responsibility for, a significant proportion of the teaching of Undergraduate Performance Costume students in costume pattern cutting and making. Alongside this, the postholder will be expected to undertake course organiser responsibilities and contribute where appropriate to broader cross-disciplinary teaching, relevant to Performance Costume. 

The post involves overseeing and teaching existing course content, contributing to future course content, and teaching delivery towards creative and contemporary performance costume practices. This includes teaching specialisms such as costume design for stage and screen, contemporary pattern cutting, costume draping, historical pattern cutting, dress histories, historical tailoring skills and professional practice to current industry standards. 

This appointment will widen the Design School’s portfolio of teaching expertise in Performance Costume Design, contributing to research, theory and practice perspectives regarding key aspects of Performance Costume design. In time, as the role develops, you will be expected to supervise PhD students and will be responsible for designing and running core courses/modules in the Subject Area of Design.

Skills and Attributes for Success

  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline related to Performance Costume, or possession of commensurate extensive experience in costume making and design for performance and screen, pattern cutting or other highly appropriate fields for contribution to undergraduate design teaching programmes.
  • Knowledge of the field of performance costume for stage, screen and moving image. And the broader industry contexts of Performance Costume, including good knowledge of the innovation-led approaches to costume design. 
  • Knowledge and expertise in teaching Performance Costume in an educational setting. With experience of best practices in teaching and learning methods, and demonstrable ability.
  • Evidence strong creative and technical ability in Costume Design and Pattern Cutting, with experience of working as a costume pattern cutter within an industry context/setting.
  • The ability to teach contemporary pattern cutting, costume draping, historical pattern cutting, & tailoring methods, and the ability to teach and support students in creative pattern cutting methods for costume production.
  • Possession of effective written and oral communication skills in a range of contexts (e.g., teaching, oral presentations, and publications), as well as good communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Being proactive, flexible and self-motivated. Able to work independently, as well as collaboratively, within cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Confident and experienced in use of core software; excel, word, teams and PowerPoint and interconnective technology for presentations on screen.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct publish, and otherwise disseminate world-leading design research in peer-reviewed journals, exhibitions and books and/or evidence of impactful design thought leadership through public talks, blogposts, contributions to policy white papers or other public engagement.
  • Demonstrable commitment to a diverse and inclusive working environment.
