The Opportunity:

The Institute of Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences (SPEHS) is located within the Moray House School of Education & Sport and is looking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Injury & Illness Epidemiology in Sport.

This is a joint-funded Post-Doctoral post with funding in place for three years. It is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively to support and develop the research and knowledge exchange activities of the new Edinburgh-Bath UK Collaborating Centre on Injury and Illness Prevention in Sport (UKCCIIS), IOC Research Centre of Excellence; Scottish Institute of Sport/UK Sports Institute; and the U.S Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) (with potential to also include La Trobe Sport and Exercise Research Centre (Australia), and University of Western Ontario (Canada), focussing on injury and illness prevention in sport.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland you will be responsible for assisting the Co-Director of UKCCIIS, Dr. Debbie Palmer, in various research activities across the Centre - and in addition support and liaise with the other partners funding this post.

A primary focus of this job will be implementing a new female retired athlete health initiative, in collaboration with partners across, the UK, Australia, Canada and United States. You will be involved in generating and supporting the preparation and submission of external funding applications. You will work with partners, principal investigators and collaborators to undertake the preparatory research required for applications to ensure timely submission. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your own related research interests.

The appointed person will be expected to make a significant contribution to the ongoing work of UKCIIS: Specifically,

  • Lead the female retired athlete health initiative, implementing study data collection and resource development
  • Assist with preparation of funding applications in collaboration with lead investigators and collaborators
  • Undertake teaching, assessment and supervision roles in sport injury and illness epidemiology – and related areas of teaching and research
  • Assist with the preparation of peer reviewed publications, presentations, blog posts, and academic conference papers for UKCIIS team members
  • Assist with, and potentially lead on research activities across the Centre including data collection and analysis
  • Actively contribute to UKCIIS and partner organisations as a core member, attending and contributing to regular meetings and activities

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term (36 months).

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • Doctoral level qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent 
  • Experience conducting research at a high level in this field of enquiry 
  • Recent experience of teaching and/or facilitating tutorials in a HE environment
