Job Description: Job Title:  Recreation Leader (Part-Time)

Pay Range: $16.80 - $20.42 / Hourly

Schedule: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 1:15 pm to 6:15 pm / Wed 12:15 pm to 6:15 pm

SUMMARY Recreation Leader is a part-time position offering a flexible schedule. Under general supervision, the Recreation Leader assists in recreation programs and directs, organizes, and conducts recreation activities for various age groups at community centers, parks and gymnasiums, special events, or other assigned areas. The recreation leader will play a vital role in multiple programs that bring our community centers, parks, and gyms to life—assisting in running recreation programs, leading activities for all ages, and organizing the fun at special events. Clear guidelines and support are given, allowing one to work independently on routine tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to impact and bring your creativity to our recreation programs positively.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Preparation and Support: 

Arrange furniture and equipment for events (sports, banquets, parties, meetings, classes, etc.) 

• Assist with program planning and organization. 

• Set up and clean up recreational areas and equipment. 

• Perform essential maintenance and cleaning tasks. 

• Collaborate with other co-workers and supervisors to keep things running smoothly.

 • Provides supervisor with necessary information concerning programs and supplies. 

• Assists volunteers in leading recreational activities or assignments. Participant Safety and Engagement:

 • Monitor activities and enforce safety rules to ensure orderly conduct in a safe and fun environment. 

• Maintain a safe environment for participants and staff. 

• Lead activities according to schedules and registration requirements. 

• Organize, officiate, and instruct children’s activities (sports, games, crafts). 

• Teach fundamentals of play and sportsmanship.

• Monitor spectators and participants at sporting and special events. 

• Keeps attendance records, financial collections, or scores at sporting events and other activities. Customer service and information: 

• Represent District policies and procedures. • Provide excellent customer service and public relations. 

• Answer questions and provide information about programs and supplies. 

• Answering phones, providing information, and receiving and receiving program fees and facility deposits. 

• Lead patrons in activities and follow schedules and registration requirements.

Equipment and inventory Management: 

• Receive, store, and maintain equipment and supplies. 

• Performs general facility inspections and maintenance to recreation facilities as assigned.

 • Operate necessary equipment for activities. 

• Security of facilities and keys is a necessary element.

Professional Development: 

• Attending and completing applicable online/in-person training sessions and orientations. 

• Demonstrate a willingness to learn and take on new tasks. Additional Notes: 

• Regular and timely attendance is mandatory. 

• Scheduled work hours may include weekends, evenings, and holidays. Who you are:

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: • Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planning recreation activities. • Arts and Crafts. • Indoor and outdoor games for children. • How to provide basic homework help for kindergarten – 6th grade. • The operation of essential office equipment. • Basic first aid and safe work practices. 

Ability to: • Assist with planning and organization of recreation programs for children. • Appear for work on time, be presentable, and in a clean uniform. • Assist in cleaning and maintaining recreational facilities. • Be a source of accurate information. • Exercise sound judgment, courtesy, and tact. • Must understand and follow directions given in writing, verbally, or through diagrams. • Accept constructive criticism.• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. • Be authoritative at facilities, dances, excursions, or special events. • Learn and follow JARPD policies and procedures, interpret departmental policies, rules, and laws, and adhere to deadlines. • Learn current software in respective program areas to perform the essential and vital functions of the job.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Minimum Requirements: • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application. • Minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent. (GED) Desired Skills & Experience • A combination of education, volunteer work, or training that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this role. • Prior experience in recreational activities. (a plus)

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Strong Communication skills are essential for this role. • Effectively interpret and apply information from various documents, including safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. • Clearly and concisely write routine reports and professional correspondence. • Confidently deliver presentations to audiences such as customers, employees, or organizations. • Bilingual is a plus. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

• Basic math skills: The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide is essential, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY 

• Can identify and solve problems with clear steps and predictable outcomes using commonsense.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

 Driver’s License & Insurance: • A valid California Driver’s License or California Identification Card (or a School ID if applicable). • Proof of valid vehicular insurance. (if applicable)

 First Aide/CPR Certification • Current First Aid/CPR certification for infants, Children, and Adults is required. • If you don’t currently hold this certification, you must obtain it within 60 days of the hire date

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  •  Use your hands: This includes handling, feeling, and manipulating objects, along with reaching with your hands and arms. • Maintain various positions: You will be expected to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull & push objects, stoop, kneel, crouch down, or jump. • Lift and carry objects: Occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. is required, with regular lifting of up to 50 lbs.

The individual must be able to identify signs of distress in a variety of environments, using a combination of visual and auditory cues or alternative methods for awareness. • Maintain balance: Climbing or balancing may be required for some tasks.
